What is Lips?

Lips: Expressions of Female Sexuality is an independent magazine, or zine, started by women and men in the city of Williamsburg , VA. It is now in the fetal stages of becoming a full-blown phenomenon in Richmond, VA!  Lips is a zine about sex, sexuality and female artistic expression. For more info, check out our Mission page.

Where can we find you?

In addition to this blog, we have a facebook to spread word of Lips, as well as to provide inspiration for submissions.

We meet once every week. Due to events and conflicting schedules, our meeting times are subject to change. Check out the “Meetings” page and our facebook for the latest on meeting times and locations.

Where can I see an issue of Lips?

We will announce our next distribution on this tumblr. For our past issue, we handed out copies on the VCU compass, placed issues in the VCU library, The Flying Brick Library (506 S. Pine Street), Crossroads Coffee, local art stores and other random locations. Next issue, we hope to make more copies and place copies in stores and public gathering spaces all over Richmond.

You can read a copy of Lips at The Flying Brick Library (506 S. Pine Street, Richmond). Just ask a volunteer to show you where it is among the zines.

You can print out a pdf of the issue here

Is there more than one chapter of Lips?

Lips was originally produced and distributed in Williamsburg, VA, at the College of William and Mary. Lips‘ co-creator, Annie B. decided to expand the zine to Richmond, VA (and beyond!), in hopes of reaching the community there, imploring them to examine the ways in which we  express female sexuality with a critical eye, and how to empower ladies and peeps of underrepresented genders/sexualities by sharing experiences in a space that is their own. You can see the first Williamsburg issue here!

When is the deadline?

We are accepting submissions anytime, however, the next release date is months off into the future.

Who can submit?

We are accepting submissions from ANYBODY (and that very much includes transgender persons, as well as gender-queer individuals, non-binary folks, etc). We are also looking for more submissions from people of color and people with working-class backgrounds. Remember, the content of Lips depends on who sends us entries. So, if you want your voice heard, SUBMIT TO LIPS!

Are there any guidelines for submissions? Is there anything that would be considered inappropriate or wouldn’t be published?

Lips Richmond has been and will continue to be free of censorship and editing, so whatever you send us will definitely be published in its entirety! There’s also no limit to the number of things you can submit, so create to your heart’s content. Feel free to be as radical and provocative as you wish.

However, The Lips Richmond staff has the right to deny the publication of pieces that are hateful, violent or promote oppressive stereotypes. Also, we will not be able to publish  simple photographs of sexual acts. We are totally stoked on erotica, but the difference between erotica and porn is art, and we’d like to be considered a literary art zine. To skirt around this rule, however, we would gladly take a drawing of a photograph, or a distorted/enhanced photograph that puts artistic meaning behind the act.
