This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: Dharun Ravi, the former Rutgers roommate of Tyler Clementi, was sentenced to just 30 days in jail today after being found guilty of invasion of privacy, bias intimidation, evidence tampering, and other counts for using a webcam to tape Clementi having sex with another man. Clementi jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge in September 2010, just days after he learned of the video and an accompanying Twitter feed.

Judge Glenn Berman’s lectured Ravi before announcing the relatively light sentence: “You lied to your roommate who placed his trust in you without any conditions, and you violated it. I haven’t heard you apologize once.” Ravi had faced up to 10 years.

In addition to his jail term, Ravi was ordered to complete 300 hours of community service; attend a counseling program for cyberbullying and alternative lifestyles; pay $10,000 to a group that helps victims of bias crimes; and serve a three-year probation sentence. Prosecutors plan to appeal.

An email by Marlene Paul, co-founder and executive director of Art 180, says that the organization has been ordered to remove their exhibition of 8-foot-tall self-portraits by 25 sixth grade students from the median of Monument Avenue by Friday. While Art 180 has a permit to keep the display up until early May, there have been complaints about the artwork being in place during the Easter Parade.

Despite the enormous outpouring of positive comments we’ve heard about our Monument Avenue exhibition–and the great photo on the front page of yesterday’s Times-Dispatch, we have been ordered to remove them by Friday.

This is a shock and disappointment, given that we have been working since last summer to follow protocol and seek the necessary approval, and we have a permit from the City’s Department of Public Works for them to remain on Monument until May 4.

Some of our fellow citizens feel that we should never have been granted permission to display the portraits on The Grand Avenue, and this is a case of people w/ money and influence vetoing City authority–where is the fairness in that? I spoke directly with one of these unhappy Monument residents, who had already contacted the Mayor’s office and won over Councilman Charles Samuels (who is, conveniently, up for reelection in a hotly-contested race). This one resident is apparently not alone, as there have been other complaints to City Hall. I don’t know how many, and I am struggling to understand why their voices can cause the revocation of a legally obtained permit.

This is ridiculous. The folks with money don’t want to see kids’ artwork during their precious little Easter parade. They want to override a permit that Art 180 has to keep up the artwork through May. Do they know what the goal of Art 180 is?

Professional artists and volunteers work with youth after school for 12 weekly sessions. Each program grows from the needs and interests of the group of young people being served.

So ESSENTIALLY what is going on is that this is the upper middle class and upper class folks that live on Monument Avenue complaining about the lower class kids’ artwork sullying their reputation during their little Easter parade. How dare they ask that a permit (i.e. a legal binding document) be overriden so that they can feel better about the disempowerment of lower class children? This makes me sick.

This is blatant class war in Richmond, VA.

A woman recently went to use a Kotex brand tampon and fortunately was a little clumsy getting it out of the packaging and discovered patches of mold growing all over the product that was seconds away from being inserted inside her. She wrote to the manufacturer and was horrified to discover that this is fairly common and received nothing more than a cookie cutter apology and some coupons to buy more of their products.

I urge anyone who uses this brand or other brands of tampons to pay closer attention when using or to perhaps consider switching to a different type of reusable product such as a Diva Cup or washable cloth liners. This is absolutely repulsive and although I no longer have periods, I felt I should inform my followers about this for their own health and safety.
